Meet Dr. Wood
Brett Wood, DMD, MS
My interest in orthodontics started right here in this office when I was a teenager. Dr. Speed, the orthodontist who established this practice 40 years ago, was my orthodontist and encouraged me to explore my interest in the scientific and hands-on aspects of the dental field. Needless to say, I fell in love with dentistry! My passion grew as I completed my orthodontic residency and I am now so happy to return to my hometown to serve my community with the same level of quality orthodontic care I received myself.
My passion is impacting the lives of my patients. I get to create a beautiful smile that can significantly change a person’s self-esteem. Adolescent and teen years are very important for shaping personality and character, and I feel privileged and honored to be a part of this critical stage of development in my patients’ lives. My life is significantly affected through interacting with so many unique people; when I get to share in the lives and perspectives of my patients, I am changed daily. The strength of central Alabama, and specifically Selma, is its people. I am so fortunate to be able to spend time with these wonderful individuals.
Education and Continuing Education
- Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences — Auburn University
- Doctorate of Dental Medicine — University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry
- General Practice Residency — Veterans Administration Hospital, Birmingham
- Master of Clinical Science in Orthodontics — University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry — Department of Orthodontics
As a recent graduate, I have had training and education in the newest, most advanced orthodontic treatment methods. As new technology is developed, I plan on attending several forms of continuing education to maintain my knowledge base in areas such as mini-implants, lasers, aesthetic appliances (including Invisalign®), early treatment, and adult treatment. As a member of the American Association of Orthodontics and the American Dental Association, I will have the opportunity to attend numerous classes and seminars throughout the year.
My team is exceptional in their vast experience in the dental field. They are very knowledgeable, efficient, and truly care about the health and happiness of each patient they meet. They have perfected the art of making every patient feel special and like they are the only person in the office.
Outside the Office
I married the love of my life, Kate Grigsby, in April 2013 and she is an amazing mother and wife. Over the last few years, God has blessed us with a daughter, Aimee (2.5 yrs) and a son, George (8mo). I enjoy spending most of my free time with them. We enjoy doing anything outdoors, traveling, eating great food and exercising. As a native of Selma, I am also fortunate to live so close to my large extended family that has supported and encouraged me over the years.
I am also dedicated to my community and want to see Selma and other central Alabama communities grow and prosper. Since my return in 2011, I have become involved in activities such as the Arsenal Place Accelerator, Leadership Selma/Dallas County Program, the Chamber of Commerce, and Blue Jean Ministries. These activities have been a great foundation for me to get involved and make an impact here in my hometown. I also have a heart for dental missions and have served in Honduras, Mexico, South Africa and Kenya over the last ten years.
